What is an Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon?
Oculofacial plastic surgeons, also known as ophthalmic plastic surgeons, are specialists in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelid and related areas of the face. To become a member of the American Society of Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) one first must become board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, complete an accredited fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, pass specialty written and oral examinations, and write a thesis on original research. There are approximately 600 such accredited oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeons in North America.
